TUSCALOOSA – At the AHSAA North Regional tournament on Thursday, Hewitt-Trussville dominated the first day with a 2,785 pin total to take the boys’ 6A/7A top seed. Defending state champion Sparkman was 68 pins back at 2,717 to earn No. 2. Seed.
The Huskies’ Hunter Kyle took first place in Thursday’s traditional competition with a 637 series. His top game was a 248 in the first round, second highest individual score of the day.
Thompson High School and Sparkman High School finished the first day of the AHSAA Regional Bowling Championships atop the South and North Class 6A/7S leaderboards and earn top seeds in Friday’s Championship Round of dual play in the girls’ competition.
The Lady Warriors totaled 2,672 pins to take top seed over second seed Stanhope Elmore (2,388) at the South Class 6A/7A Regional and defending state champion Sparkman had a 2,566 total in the first day’s three traditional game rounds to earn top seed at the North Regional.
The Class 6A/7A championship rounds get underway in the second session at Spanish Fort’s Eastern Shore Lanes (South) and Tuscaloosa’s Shindig Family Entertainment Center (North) at 1 p.m. Friday. The Class 1A/5A championship rounds open play at 7 a.m.
Spanish Fort earned top seed in the 6A/7A boys’ competition with a 2,696 total in the three traditional games. Hoover was second with 2,625 pins.
Gracie Connelly of Thompson had the top girls’ single game (247) at the South Regional and also had the top series (684). Alyssa Ward of Stanhope Elmore had a 537 series for second place.
Sparkman’s Emily Lindsey rolled 242 in the third round for the top girls’ 6A/7A single-game score, and she finished with the top series (646), Spain Park’s Emma Hawkins rolled a 236 in the first round for the second best round and had a 545 series to rank No. 2 in the North competition.
Thompson’s Bodie Bubel had the top series in the Class 6A/7A boys’ south competition (669) and the second best single round (255). Austin Osburn of Mary Montgomey rolled a 259 in the third round for the top single game and closed with a 660 series to finish second behind Bubel.
Michael Kimble of Spain Park had the top single game at the North 6A/7A competition with a 266 in the third round.
All matches Friday will be in the Baker format. The top four teams qualify for next week’s AHSAA State Bowling Championships set for Gadsden’s Alley Bowling Center, Jan. 27-28.
