TRUSSVILLE — Trussville City Schools (TCS) recognized the board members for School Board Member Recognition Month and TCS teachers for their accomplishments in the monthly board member on Thursday, January 27.
Linda Woodfin OdomMargaret WickershamThe Board discussed the COVID surge in schools, and Neill proposed and recommended that TCS Friday, February 4 and Friday, February 18 be remote learning and instructional days.
“I want to start by saying that Jefferson County is in a surge,” Superintendent Dr. Pattie Neill said. “Everybody knows there’s a surge in COVID numbers. Not a lot we can do about that. But I will say it is 15 days since winter break, and none of those 15 days have been alike. We’ve had some students out some students are back. Some students had COVID, some teachers were out some teachers are back. It has been very, very, very inconsistent.”
Neill said it has been “like a juggling act,” trying to get students, teachers, and faculty realigned. COVID has impacted different schools in different ways.
The remote learning days would mean the students would learn from home. Teachers and faculty would have a chance to upload lesson plans for students.
“Students are at different levels,” Neill said. “What the teachers have had to do right now is grade their assignments, they then have taken makeup work from these absent students and regrade the same assignment over and over. Teachers have given tests, graded the tests, then they have to give makeup tests and grade the same test over and over. So the last 15 days have looked like that. We’ve had students out, we’ve had teachers out, and it’s just been so inconsistent in terms of our flow.”
