As the saying goes, every fighter has a plan until they get punched. For the second game in as many, the Hewitt Girls soccer team got punched early, only to battle back to earn the 2-1 victory.
In the varsity end of the Saturday doubleheader, Hewitt found themselves trailing for the second game in a row. Grissom drew first blood with a nice goal to open the scoring.
The game settled into a physical and almost literal slugfest, with a double red card being issued.
Jocelyn Davis brought the Huskies back even with her second goal in as many games.
Julia Farris then put the Huskies up by the final 2-1 score when she netted a ball.
Coach Lauren Wooten saw the game as a chance to learn.
“It was an evenly matched and physical contest. Both programs did a great job possessing and were passionate about winning. I am hoping we can learn from tonight’s game and move forward.”
Hewitt is at home again against Chelsea on February 8, with the JV kicking off at 5 p.m., directly followed by the varsity game.
JV ends in 0-0 tie
The JV Lady Huskies had every opportunity to get their second win of the season, but couldn’t find the back of the net in a game they almost completely controlled.
Hustle and defense by sophomore Ellie Christian and the Husky back line kept Grissom from any chance of a scoring threat.
Hewitt saw many chances to break through, but could never make the successful connection.
The Lady Huskies best chance came with 5 minutes left to go, when Janie Steele was fouled just outside the penalty area. Steele’s direct kick was deflected up into the air by the Grissom goalkeeper, and Addie Rutland’s attempted header on the rebound hit the crossbar. The ball bounced around like a pinball in the five yard box for several seconds, but was eventually cleared by the Grissom defense.
The game ended in a 0-0 draw.
Friday, Feb. 4: Varsity beats Bob Jones
As the wind chill dropped into the upper 20’s, the Hewitt varsity girls earned a tough comeback victory, scoring two goals in the last 15 minutes to edge Bob Jones, 2-1 in a meeting of top 10 teams in 7A.
Jones opened the scoring with a goal and held the lead until Anna Grace Savage broke through with the equalizer to tie the game with 15 minutes left. Savage scored the first goal of the season for the Huskies, assisted by Julia Farris.
Hewitt would not be satisfied with the draw, as freshman Jocelyn Davis found the back of the net in the waning minutes to seal the 2-1 victory.
Wooten was pleased with the way her team has gelled together with the mix of newcomers and veterans.
“We have leaders on the bench and on the field from 8th to 12th grade and they all have the same goal-to win state. They did a great job playing together and starting the season off strong against a great opponent.”
JV notches 4-0 win vs. Bob Jones JV
Sophomore Caroline Krayer scored two goals and recorded an assist to lead the lady Huskies while the defense did not allow a shot on goal in an easy 4-0 victory.
Sally Deshazo opened the scoring for the lady Huskies in the 5th minute on an assist from Lydia Bridges, who placed a perfect cross into the box from the left wing.
Krayer scored her first goal of the game in the 20th minute with a laser past the keeper. Hewitt took a 2-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, Caley Mosley scored after a nice extra pass from Krayer to make the score 3-0 in the 20th minute of the second half.
Krayer finished up the scoring with less than 5 seconds to go, to give the Huskies a 4-0 win. Hewitt’s high press defense rarely allowed Bob Jones to cross the midfield line in the second half.
