Martha Gladden Hill of Birmingham passed away Monday, February 21, 2022, at her home.
Martha was born July 17, 1936, in Athens, Alabama, to Roston Elmer Gladden and Reba (Newby) Gladden. She graduated from Hewitt-Trussville High School in 1954 and Samford University. On May 19, 1956, she married Lowell G. Hill of Wedowee at her home in Center Point. Martha was employed in accounting and human resources at Vulcan Materials Company for over 40 years. After retiring, she was a persuasive and successful fund-raiser for multiple charitable organizations, enjoyed special event planning, and was an award-winning public speaker. Martha was passionate about a cappella singing and was a talented alto vocalist. She often sang with her three sons, and her love and talent for music is carried on by her children and grandchildren. Martha was an active member of the Homewood Church of Christ.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John Stanford Gladden and Bobby Glenn Gladden (Pat), and one sister, Edwina “Winkie” Blake (Allen). She is survived by her husband, one sister, Gale Gladden Melton (Martin), one sister-in-law, Elois Caddell, three children, Lowell Keith Hill, John Kevin Hill, and Douglas Bradford Hill and his wife, Elisabeth Rohlfs-Hill, and two grandchildren, Gareth Bradford Hill and Igrainne Paikea Hill.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, February 28, at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens in Trussville, with a service at 12 p.m. and burial to follow. The family would like to thank the health care professionals of Oasis Hospice for their ongoing, loving care and dedication.
