BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) reports that a possible hostage situation is over at a Birmingham apartment building shortly after 5 p.m.
According to the BPD, an officer-involved shooting and a homicide investigation are underway. The incident occurred at the University Crossings Apartment Complex. Officers from the South Precinct responded to a hostage situation in the 200 block of 3rd Street Southwest.
“Upon arrival, officers observed a female subject shoot a male in the officer’s presence resulting in his death,” Sergeant Rodarius Mauldin said. “An officer discharged his weapon striking the female subject.”
The female was transported to a local area hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no officers injured during this incident.
“Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will be the lead investigative agency in the officer-involved shooting and the homicide investigation,” Mauldin said.
Mauldin stated officers involved in this incident will be placed on administrative leave per the Birmingham Police Department’s Policies and Procedures.
