JEFFERSON COUNTY — A two-vehicle crash at approximately 9:20 a.m. on I-59 Northbound involving an 18-wheeler has left two people dead on Monday, March 21.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Clifton J. Cottingham, 47, of West Blocton, and his passenger, Roy Melton Jr., 42, of Brent, were both fatally injured when the 1998 Chevrolet S10 driven by Cottingham left the roadway and struck the rear of a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was parked on the emergency shoulder of Interstate 59.
Cottingham and Melton were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred near the 145-mile marker, approximately four miles north of Trussville, in Jefferson County.
Nothing further is available as Troopers with the ALEA Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
