GULF SHORES — A pair of tough losses gave the Moody Blue Devils a rough start to the Gulf Shores Tournament. Moody dropped the first game to Richmond-Burton 7-6 on Monday, March 28, and then fell to the Athens Golden Eagles 10-7 on Tuesday. Moody falls to 11-11 on the season.
Moody plays twice today: at 11:30 a.m. Kaneland (Illinois) and at 2 p.m. against Bayside Academy.
Game 1: Richmond-Burton 7, Moody 6
The Blue Devils couldn’t hold on to a 5-1 lead as Richmond-Burton came back to put up five runs in the seventh inning for a come-from-behind victory.
Blaine Burke went 1-for-4 with a run scored, while Chase Marshall went 1-for-3 and scored twice. Zach Johnson, who took the loss on the mound in relief, went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Nathan Kennedy went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bourne Grant went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, a walk, and scored once.
Game 2: Athens 10, Moody 7
The Blue Devils lost the lead late for the second game in a row, despite tallying 11 hits for 7 runs. Moody’s Nathan Kennedy gave up a 3-run homer in the eighth inning to end it after Moody came back in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie things up at 7.
Blaine Burke went 1-for-4 with a walk and scored twice, Chase Marshall went 2-for-4 with a walk, and Kennedy helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and scoring once. Matt Johnson went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, and scored twice. Andy Goodwin went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
