BIRMINGHAM — A 3-year-old was killed in a double homicide, and a suspect was taken into custody on Sunday, April 3.
According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Cynthia Delane Burt, 62, of Birmingham, and Desmond Burt, Jr., 3, of Birmingham sustained injuries during a reported double homicide.
The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) states that at approximately 5:12 p.m., officers from the West Precinct were dispatched to a welfare check at 4909 Hillman Drive Southwest.
“Upon arrival, officers received information from family members who were unable to contact their loved one at the residence,” Sergeant Rodarius Mauldin said. “Birmingham Police along with Birmingham Fire and Rescue executed a forced entry into the residence.”
Officers discovered an elderly woman and a 3-year-old unresponsive in a back room. Both were pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue.
The victims will be identified upon next of kin notification.
“The preliminary investigation indicates injuries sustained by both victims lead detectives to classify this investigation as a homicide,” Mauldin said. “A person of interest has been taken into custody and is being questioned by detectives.”
The story will be updated when more information is available.
