TRUSSVILLE — The Huskies whipped Gadsden City 13-0 to pick up an area win on Thursday, April 7.
Starting pitcher Riley Quick went five innings in the run-rule game, allowing two hits and striking out six. He also hit a bomb in the top of the fifth that may still be going, accounting for the final two runs of the game.
Matt Miller also hit a two-run homer. The Huskies and Gadsden City will rematch tonight, April 8, in Gadsden.
Kurt Kizer had a pair of hits and an RBI, while Brett Moseley had an RBI double. Jack Ollis and Brooks McRae each had an RBI as well.
“They didn’t play their best, and we know that,” Hewitt-Trussville head coach Jeff Mauldin said after the game. “Just last week they went to Hoover and beat Hoover. So we know they’re a lot better than they played tonight. That’s baseball — sometimes you have bad days, and I thought we had a good day.”
Despite the 13-0 victory, there are still things to work on.
“Obviously Riley pitched well enough to win,” Mauldin said. “He wasn’t great early, but his command — after the second inning — I thought he settled in really good. Defensively, I thought we made some really good plays … the biggest thing, really, is when Riley Quick pitches, we have a chance to win. If we score runs, we’re going to win.”
