BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) arrested a 21-year-old man for the murder of his mother on Friday, April 8, 2022.
According to the Birmingham Police Department (BPD), Jamari Cook, 21, of Birmingham, was taken into custody by BPD’s Crime Reduction Team and booked into the Birmingham City Jail for the murder of 46-year-old Veronica Joseph.
Joseph was found lying unresponsive on the ground in the roadway. Officers also observed an adult male victim lying unresponsive in the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced Joseph dead. BFR transported the male to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“While on the scene, officers learned a third adult male was shot at the original location; he was located in the 4700 block of Avenue Q,” Officer Truman Fitzgerald said. “BFR transported the third victim to UAB Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound injury.”

“On Monday, April 11, 2022, Birmingham Police Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office,” Fitzgerald said. “After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained warrants for murder (No Bond) and two counts of attempted murder ($60,000 on each charge).”
Jamari Cook will be held in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
“The motive, in this case, is domestic-related,” Fitzgerald said” “Jamari Cook is the son of Veronica Josep.”
