TRUSSVILLE — It wasn’t the way any senior on the Hewitt-Trussville softball team would want to go out. On a night dedicated to the seniors who have spent their high school careers winning a pair of state titles — and who could have won another, had the 2020 season not been canceled due to COVID-19 — Thompson stepped up and wrecked that celebration, run-ruling the Huskies, 12-0 in five innings.
Eleanor DeBlock went all five innings for Thompson, holding Hewitt-Trussville to a pair of hits and no runs over the course of five innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
But the story of this game was that Thompson not only quieted the Huskies’ bats, limiting Hewitt-Trussville to a single by Emily Onofry and a double by Kenleigh Cahalan; The Warriors figured out how to hit Sarah Hindman early and often. After a scoreless first inning, Thompson got on board after a walk, a hit, and another walk loaded the bases.
They then took advantage of those ducks on the pond, plating three runs in the second inning. It was a sign of things to come. Kendall Channell and Laney Williams each homered in the third, while Ella Pate had two dingers for the visitors, and the Warriors surged ahead with four runs in the third.
It was a measure of revenge for Thompson, who took a home loss against the Huskies earlier in the season when Hindman and Sara Phillips combined to defeat the Warriors 5-1 back on March 1.
That win, part of a 22-game win streak for the Huskies, looks to be far in the rear-view mirror.
Hindman took the loss in the circle, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing seven hits and seven runs. Zaylen Tucker came on in relief, allowing five runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. Both Huskies pitchers walked three.
The loss is the second in a row for the Huskies, who play Vestavia on Monday, May second in the first round of the 7A playoffs.
Hewitt also lost on Tuesday vs. Wetumpka, 2-1. The Huskies are 37-6-1 on the season headed into the playoffs.
Hewitt-Trussville vs. Vestavia is set for 6 p.m. on Monday.
