SPRINGVILLE — The Springville City Council met for the second regular meeting of May on Monday night, May 16. Councilmember Wayne Tucker conducted the meeting as Mayor Pro Tempore, standing in for Mayor Dave Thomas.
Representatives from EcoSouth Services appeared before the Council in the pre-meeting work session to discuss ongoing issues with debris pickup in the city. In the May 2 regular meeting, council members agreed to seek a third-party vendor to get the debris removal caught up if the situation persisted.
“We were expecting to have the debris picked up in accordance with our agreement, and we’ve got some that have been there a month and some that have been there two or three months,” said Tucker.
Tucker said the city has contemplated hiring another vendor to get the debris removal caught up. In the May 2 meeting, councilmember Parker proposed taking action to hire a third party.
“We’re paying, and the citizens are paying every month,” said Tucker. “I’m catching a lot of flack about it, and I’m sure all of us are.”
Tony Smith, operations supervisor for EcoSouth, said the company is sending trucks to pick up debris on weekends to try to get caught up, but some of the debris piles are outside of what is required in the contracts—including construction debris.
“There comes a time when you have to take some action, and we’re to that point,” said Tucker. “You signed a contract to do that, and my honest opinion is you did not have the method suitable to do that when you signed that contract.”
Members of EcoSouth are expected to return for the June 6 meeting to give an update.
In other business, the Council approved a rezoning request for 1075 Oak Grove Road from R-1 residential to R-3 residential and mobile home.
The Council also approved the renewal of the annual contracts with M4A (Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging) for food service at the Springville Senior Center and approved a $3250 contract with Raymond James Investments for bond issues.
The Council approved $9100 for the Springville Fire Department for vehicle repairs.
The next meeting of the council will be on June 6.
