TRUSSVILLE – The Trussville City Council tabled an ordinance to rezone the Glendale Farms at Carrington development on Thursday, May 19, 2022. The ordinance, which is to rezone Glendale Farms to PUD (Planned Urban Development) from A-1 (Agricultural) and I-1 and I-2 (Industrial), will come back before the council on Tuesday, June 14.
During the pre-council workshop meeting, Redmont Consulting Group Managing Director Doug Neil, speaking on behalf of Glendale Farms LLC, made the request for the council to postpone voting in order for Glendale Farms to address some questions that have been raised and make a fully informed decision.
“I’m aware that there are a number of questions that have come up and been raised,” he said. “If it would please the council, I’d like to ask that this matter be continued to the next council meeting to allow the school board to continue to evaluate their needs with respect to the elementary school and potential alternatives, and for the council to address any questions it may have in order to evaluate the merits of the proposed project.”
Councilor Alan Taylor said that the council has previously had a precedent of honoring such requests from applicants.
“I would think, if he’s asked to pull it, we should honor that,” Taylor said. “That’s what we’ve always done. Anybody that comes and requests to have something taken off the agenda, we’ve allowed them to do that, because if not, there’s a vote that will take place and he’s asked us not to do that. He’s asked to pull it off for further consideration.”
Councilor Ben Short asked Neil to clarify the intent of the postponement, and whether or not any changes were being considered for the development plan.
“At this point, I’ve only been brought (and) aware of a couple of questions,” Neil said. “I don’t know what changes would be warranted. The plan is well-conceived, but at the same time, to the extent, there are questions that have to be addressed. In one way or another, we’ll be certainly prepared to address those.”
The council agreed to table the ordinance until its June 14 meeting.
During the regular meeting, the council passed two proclamations honoring Trussville City Schools student-athletes.
Councilor Lisa Bright read aloud Proclamation 2022-16, honoring the Hewitt Trussville Middle School Boys Track and Field team for winning the Metro Championship. A motion to approve the proclamation passed the council unanimously.
“Very exciting for this group,” Bright said. “I believe it’s their first time in history to ever win.”
Bright also read aloud and made a motion to approve Proclamation 2022-17, honoring HTHS freshman Molly Davidson for being named 7A State Golf Champion. The motion passed unanimously.
“As y’all have heard, Molly is a freshman, and for me to say I’m a coach, that is really a stretch,” HTHS Head Varsity Girls Golf Coach Leigh Burke said. “I’m a cheerleader. I’m here to give her water and make sure she has sunscreen and snacks. Her dad is her coach, Molly has been her own coach, her sister has been her coach. Her family has been such a support to get her to where she is. She’s amazing. You’ve never seen anybody that can put the effort, the integrity, the loyalty … she’s on it all the time. She’s helping other people, she’s helping the team. So, to say this girl has a bright future is an understatement. I am just very fortunate to have been a small part of cheering her on as she’s on this mighty, wonderful trip.”
In other news, the council approved the following:
- Proclamation 2022-15, declaring Trussville City facilities styrofoam-free
- Proclamation 2202-18, declaring the Leland Dockery Tribute Cruise-In a city-wide event
- Ordinance 2022-10 ADM, revising the City Tree Ordinance
- Resolution 2022-24, awarding the Edwards Lake Parkway widening project to Dunn Construction Co., Inc.
The council also held the first reading of an ordinance to rezone various Husky Parkway properties to Q-RG (Qualified Garden Residential), C-1 (Commercial), and RT (Townhouses) from A-1 (Agricultural). The request for rezoning comes from Nick Kennemur, of Little Goose Development, who presented a map of his plans for a garden home and townhome development to the council during its workshop.
The next meeting of the Trussville City Council will be Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at Trussville City Hall.
