TRUSSVILLE — Hewitt-Trussville defeated the Thundering Herd 35-7 during a spring game that saw the Hewitt passing game explode and their defense shut out Parker until the last play of the game.
Hewitt got the ball to start the game and wasted no time getting on the board as Peyton Floyd and company marched down the field with the quarterback finding one of his favorite targets on the night, Ka’Darius Barnes for a 36-yard touchdown pass with 8:36 to go in the opening frame. The Husky defense smothered the Herd and would not allow them to score, but the offense would sputter through the rest of the quarter as well.
The second quarter saw much of the same as the Huskies’ Floyd would spread the ball around to 3 different receivers on the first drive of the quarter. Eventually, he would call his own number on a second and goal from the 5-yard line, contributing to his second touchdown of the night.
Parker still could not find any room on offense. On a third and 8 from their own 23, Parker quarterback Malik Muhammad dropped back to pass and found…Hewitt defensive lineman Jordan Colley. Floyd and company would strike again just before the half with the quarterback finding Jadon Loving from 19 yards out to head into the locker room with a commanding 21-0 lead.
Floyd would continue to spread the ball around to Loving and Barnes as well as Jacob Serena and Donovan Price, but the second half saw the running game get a spark from Jaqson Melton who ran for 27 yards, followed by a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to put the Huskies up 28-0. Parker would see a few big plays in the third quarter, but never quite caught enough traction to put points on the board.
The fourth quarter saw new faces enter the game for both teams, but the story stayed pretty much the same. Hewitt was throwing the ball all over the place and Parker could not get anything going. Backup quarterback Noah Dobbins got in on the fun, driving the ball down to the 5-yard line, where he punched it in on second and goal to close out the scoring for Hewitt and make it 35-0. Parker would score on a 55-yard touchdown on the final play of the game to steal the shutout from the Huskies, but that did not deter Coach Josh Floyd. “I thought the defense played really well. We tackled really well tonight.”
Peyton Floyd finished the night 19 of 32 passing with 271 yards and 3 total touchdowns (2 passing and 1 rushing). Regarding his quarterback, Coach Floyd said, “I thought he played well. We ran him a little bit. We didn’t really want to run him too much tonight. Overall I was pretty pleased with our pass game.
