ENSLEY — The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) identified the shooting victim in an Ensley neighborhood on Monday, June 6, just after 3 p.m.
“Officers from the West Precinct responded to a ShotSpotter alert of twenty-one rounds fired in the 1100 block of 40th Street Ensley,” Sergeant Rodarius Mauldin said. “Officers arrived and observed a white van struck multiple times by gunfire.”
When officers responded, they located a man unresponsive in the driver seat of the vehicle and a female in the passenger seat suffering from what are considered to be life-threatening injuries. Authorities marked 21 shell casings in the area of the shooting.
The male was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel, and the female was taken to UAB Hospital.
“The preliminary investigation indicates both victims were sitting in the parked vehicle when the suspects fired several rounds into the vehicle,” Mauldin said. “Detectives believe the victims were targeted; however, a motive has not been established.”
Authorities ask anyone who has information pertaining to the case to contact the BPD Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
This is Birmingham’s 53rd murder investigation of 2022, including five justifiable death investigations.
