TRUSSVILLE — For much of the year, Hewitt-Trussville shortstop Kenleigh Cahalan couldn’t get anyone to pitch to her. The big-hitting junior racked up a ton of free bases during a season where the Huskies went to the AHSAA 7A state finals for the third straight time.
When she did get to swing the bat, Cahalan regularly made opposing pitchers pay the price; in the field, she was about as sure-handed as they come, too. That’s why Cahalan was named the 7A Player of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association earlier this week.
Cahalan was joined on the ASWA 7A First Team squad by sophomore pitcher Sara Phillips. Second baseman Hannah Dorsett and utility infielder Riley Tyree made the 7A All-State Second Team. Sophomore third baseman Olivia Faggard earned honorable mention.
In 6A, Springville’s Makalyn Kyser made First Team as the designated hitter, while Bella Bullington earned Second Team honors.
In 5A, Moody outfielder Taylor Rogers, a freshman, earned First Team honors, and Leeds’ Zoie Galloway made the Second Team as an infielder.
