IRONDALE — Longtime TC Central head coach Chris Mahand has been hired as the linebacker coach at Shades Valley High School.
The move was made official on Tuesday, June 14, when the Jefferson County Board of Education approved the hire.
Mahand stepped down as a head coach because, he said, he wanted the opportunity to coach his son at Shades Valley.
“It was an opportunity for me being real close to retiring to finally get an opportunity to coach my son,” Mahand told The Anniston Star. “I’ve done a lot for other people’s sons for 24 years of my coaching career. The coach has been on me the last couple of years about coming over there and helping the staff out. For me to get the opportunity to coach my son as a senior I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to coach my own son for a change.”
Mahand coached for 11 years total at TC Central over two separate terms at the school. From 2006-2008, he went 33-7 as head coach of the Fighting Tigers. His second stint, beginning in 2014, was less successful as the program went 28-52.
