MOODY — Moody Elementary School unveiled its Sensory Garden on Thursday, July 14.
Imagine the peace of sitting on a garden bench next to a gnome, reading a book while listening to wind chimes and a water fountain. Knowing that learning takes place all around, Moody Elementary looked for a way where learning can take place through all the senses in a peaceful environment.
Thanks to a $9,000 grant from Coosa Valley RC&D and donations of plants, dirt, and mulch from Heath Drake, Moody Elementary was able to build a beautiful sensory garden next to the gym. This garden houses multiple raised beds and pots that are growing colorful wildflowers, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and even a couple of Christmas trees.
Students will enjoy taking in the beautiful sights in glider rockers, benches, swings, and a picnic table under a large patio umbrella. Not only will endless science, nutrition, and health lessons take place, but students will also be able to take sensory breaks if needed.
All five senses are engaged in the garden. Some examples are soft and prickly plants, water elements and wind chimes, soothing smells, an array of colorful flowers, tasteful fruits, vegetables, and cooking herbs. Once students return to school, they will be given a rock to paint to add their own individual addition to the garden.
With this garden, Moody Elementary saw the need to help further address the nurturing of not only academics but the whole child, including a place for a calming mental health break. Teachers and staff are excited to soon see the students learning how to take care of the garden as well as learning how to care for their minds as well.
