IRONDALE — Former University of Alabama (UA) running back Trent Richardson spoke at the Greater Irondale Chamber of Commerce (GICC) Luncheon on July 14. He shared memories of his days at UA as well as thoughts on his current role as director of Irondale youth athletics.
“I grew up in a rough neighborhood,” Richardson said. “My mom raised 11 kids by herself—three of her own—and she made youth sports a priority for us. I want to give kids the opportunity to be successful, and sports is a great way to get them on the right track, help them to stay out of trouble.”
He also remembered the day he got a phone call from Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban.
“I thought it was a joke,” Richardson said. “I thought somebody was playing a trick. I couldn’t believe he was calling me. But when I visited the campus and saw the facilities, I knew that was where I wanted to be, and it gave me the motivation to work
harder.”
