MONTGOMERY — Hewitt-Trussvill’s Tristan Teer was the top performer for the North All-Stars, but it wasn’t enough as the North Cross-Country All-Stars fell to the South All-Stars during the AHSAA All-Star Sports Week on Tuesday, July 19.
In the boys’ competition, Auburn’s Max Hardin won in a photo finish with South teammate Michael Conwell of St. Paul’s Episcopal with an All-Star Week record 15:45.13 time. Conwell, who finished second in the Class 7A state meet in 2021, crossed at 15:45.18 and Hewitt-Trussville’s Teer was the North top finisher with a 15:47.28 time to take third. All three times broke the mark (15:52) set by Tallassee’s Woodrow Dean in the 2021 competition.
In the girls’ 5,000-meter race held at Montgomery’s Gateway Park, Mountain Brook High School rising senior Reagan Riley, the 2021 Class 6A state cross country champion, set a new all-star event record winning with a time 17:59.25. The previous All-Star Week record was set in 2018 by Amaris Tyynismaa of Montgomery Catholic. Lawrence County’s Savannah Williams, the Class 5A state meet champion last season, also surpassed Tyynismaa’s mark with a time of 18:54.61 to finish second. Her twin sister Taylor Williams was third clocking 19:20.26. The top runner for the South All-Stars was Abigail Garner of Central-Phenix City. She crossed in 19:54.98 to finish fourth.
Rounding out the top five were South runners Stone Smith of St. Paul’s Episcopal (16:10:87) and Thomas Parnell of Auburn (16:28.53).
Coaches for the North were Trent Dean of Cullman (girls); Chris Schmidt of Hoover (boys); and Michael McGovern of Mountain Brook (administrative coach). South coaches were Courtney Page of McGill-Toolen Catholic (girls); Jonathan Fischer of Opelika (boys); and Ron Peters of Smiths Station (administrative coach).
