Cheney Jasper Lawler, Jr., 83, went to his eternal home on July 27, 2022.
A lifelong resident of Birmingham, Cheney was born on August 26, 1938, to Henrietta Strickland Lawler and Cheney Lawler, Sr., who preceded him in death. He was married to the love of his life, Joyce Lawler, for over 46 years. Cheney grew up as an active member of 66th Street Baptist Church, where he placed his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized. Cheney was a graduate of Woodlawn High School. He attended the University of Alabama and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Birmingham for over 40 years. He was also a retiree of AT&T. He served on the Kenny Morgan Scholarship Foundation for Samford University, volunteered in serving the annual Bobby Bowden Golf Tournament, and was inducted into the Central Alabama Amateur Softball Association Fast Pitch Hall of Fame in 2002. He also coached softball and basketball for many years, including Mel Bailey’s Sherriff’s Department Fast Pitch Softball team.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Lawler; his sons Paul Lawler (Missy) and Patrick Lawler (Kim); grandsons Luke Lawler (Leah), Ryan Lawler (Sam), Wes Lawler, Laura Lawler (fiancé, Victor), and Stewart Lawler (Mary); and one great-grandson, Levi Lawler.
Cheney is preceded in death by his sisters, Jean Falkner (Don); Julia Albert; and brother, Thomas Lawler (Peggy).
Visitation and Celebration of Life will take place at First United Methodist Church, Birmingham, with visitation at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 2, with Celebration of Life service to follow at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Stephanie Arnold and Rev. Paul Lawler officiating.
