BIRMINGHAM — A 25-year-old was arrested for the murder of a Birmingham man that occurred on Wednesday, August 31, 2022.
According to the Birmingham Police Department (BPD), D’Angelo Rashad Edwards, of Fairfield, was arrested for the murder of 20-year-old Derrell Willis, who was shot and killed while in the 7500 Block of 66th Street South.

“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim and an adult male got into a verbal argument that led to the suspect firing shots at the victim,” Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated.
Willis was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:21 p.m.
Fitzgerald stated that East Precinct Task Force officers gained information on the suspect’s whereabouts while on the scene. As a result, officers surrounded an apartment in the 6700 block of Kimberly Avenue.
“They observed the suspect attempting to enter a vehicle and flee the scene,” Fitzgerald stated. “East Precinct Task Force Officers took the suspect into custody free of any incident. The suspect will be transported to BPD Headquarters, where Homicide detectives will question him.”
BPD reports detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for murder.
Edwards was taken into custody by East Task Force officers shortly after the shooting. He is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with a $1,000,000 Bond.
BPD states that this arrest was made possible due to several community members assisting our patrol officers on the scene.
“Thank you to the brave community members who played such a vital role in this arrest,” BPD stated in a press release.
