TRUSSVILLE — Penalties doomed Hewitt-Trussville as the Huskies tried to put together a pair of drives in the fourth quarter against Hoover on Friday, September 6, but the Huskies came away with no points on either possession and lost 17-7 to the Bucaneers.
Starting quarterback Peyton Floyd dove into the end zone from one yard out in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7 in the second quarter on a Huskies’ drive that saw him tote the rock five times on a seven-play drive. The Huskies wouldn’t score again, and the Hewitt-Trussville offense was limited to 205 yards of total offense on the night.
This was the Bucs’ fifth straight win against Hewitt-Trussville, and this was a much anticipated meeting between the No. 5 Huskies and No. 6 Bucs in a stacked 7A Region 3. Hoover eliminated the Huskies from the 7A playoffs in 2021 with a double overtime victory when Hewitt-Trussville went for a two-point conversion and the win. That attempt failed, and it ended the Huskies’ season.
Hewitt-Trussville was unable to gain a measure of revenge, as its offense couldn’t get it going.
Hoover took an early lead late in the first quarter with a 9-play, 71-yard drive, capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brewer Smith to Jordan Woolen for the score. That made it 7-0, Bucs, but the Huskies rallied to tie it in the second quarter.
Hoover went up for good in the third quarter as human bowling ball Ahamari Williams took a direct snap from the 1-yard line and powered into the end zone to complete a 10-play, 77-yard drive. The PAT made it 14-7 for the Bucs.
Floyd finished the night 13-for-23 passing for 72 yards and an interception. He also had 19 carries for 68 yards and a score . Kennedy Mitchell finished with eight carries for 25 yards, while Jadon Loving finished with five catches for 31 yards.
Defensively, Tyrell Averhart had two sacks.
The Huskies play their next two games on the road: Next week against Huffman and then they’ll face Thompson the following Friday.
