IRONDALE – The Irondale City Council approved a resolution Tuesday to officially change the name of the building formerly known as the Zamora Temple, located at 3521 Ratliff Road, to the Irondale Civic Center. The resolution was submitted to the council for consideration by Mayor James D. Stewart Jr.
“Just for everyone out there … we are not talking about permanent plans for Zamora,” Council President David Spivey said. “Only while it is existing and until we come up with any plans for that, we have the opportunity to rent it out and create a revenue stream, and that is what we are doing. We are simply changing the name. No permanent plans are in place.”
The city purchased the building on June 30, 2022, for the amount of $5 million.
“I am excited that the city has acquired a large facility that will allow us to continue hosting events that bring (the) community together,” Stewart said in a previous statement. “We are also excited about the possibility of using the venue to attract new recreational and entertainment opportunities to Irondale.”
Anyone interested in renting the facility can contact Brad Doss at BDoss@cityofirondaleal.gov.
The council held two public hearings concerning the demolition of unsafe structures on properties located at 965 Grants Mill Road and 1224 Mill Lane.
One of the owners of 965 Grants Mill Road spoke to the council, asking that they allow him to be responsible for the demolition of the house on his property, rather than the city. However, clarifications were made that there are five other heirs to the property who are not in agreement to demolish the property, which ties the city’s hands on giving a demolition permit to only one co-owner of the property.
No one spoke during the public hearing on 1224 Mill Lane.
Following the hearings, the council approved the following:
- Resolution 2022-R-204, amending prior resolutions approved by the city council related to the compensation increase for Public Safety employees to include the positions of Public Safety Dispatcher II and Public Safety Dispatcher Supervisor
- Resolution 2022-R-206, declaring weeds and other vegetation a nuisance and ordering abatement for property located at 2314 Third Ave. S, Irondale, AL
- Resolution 2022-R-207, declaring property at 965 Grants Mill Road a public nuisance and ordering its abatement
- Resolution 2022-R-208, declaring property at 1224 Mill Lane a public nuisance and ordering its abatement
The next regular meeting of the Irondale City Council will be Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022, beginning at 6 p.m.
