BIRMINGHAM – The Birmingham Police Department reported that detectives have obtained warrants for arrests in connection to the murder of Charles Edward Smith Jr., who was shot and killed on Monday, Dec. 26, at approximately 1:44 a.m. in the 2700 block of Jefferson Avenue SW.
According to the BPD, Alphonso David Lockhart III, 21, of Birmingham, was taken into custody at around 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 26, and placed on an investigative hold at the Birmingham City Jail.
“Birmingham Police Detectives gathered information and presented it to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office,” Sergeant Monica Law stated.
After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for murder with a bond of $1,500,000 and two warrants for attempted murder with bonds of $60,000 each.
Lockhart is currently in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.

“West Precinct officers responded to a call for a person shot in the 2700 block of Jefferson Avenue SW at 1:44 a.m. on Dec. 26,” Law stated in a previous press release. “Upon arrival, officers observed an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.”
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene and pronounced the victim dead.
“Two other individuals, an adult female and a teenage victim suffering from non-life-threatening injuries had been transported from the scene by private vehicle to an area hospital,” Law stated in a previous press release. “The injured individuals were also at the same location when the adult male was killed.”
