TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville City Council reminded the public of the Trussville City Schools Board of Education board member application deadline during the workshop meeting on Thursday, Jan. 19.
The city of Trussville is accepting applications for a new Trussville City Schools Board of Education board member. The deadline for applications is Jan. 31, 2023.
The council will start calling the applicants on Feb. 1, going through them, and setting up interviews in February. The council plans to announce someone by the end of February or Mar. 1.
The application can be found at www.trussville.org.
Council member Ben Short and Council President Lisa Bright will be council representatives to serve on the school board committee.
“We typically have two city councilors that serve on that committee plus the mayor, the representative from the school board, and HR from the city,” Bright said. “So that has worked really well in the past; this will be our third year to do it that way.”
The committee will recommend their top candidate(s) to the council, who will then vote to appoint the new board member.
Council member Perry Cook explained he had a conversation with TCS Interim Superintendent Dr. Frank Costanzo, who recommended making the final interviews for the school board member public.
Cook said he does not have a preference either way. However, council member Alan Taylor and Council member Jaime Anderson disagreed with the idea of making the interviews public.
“I respect his opinion, but I totally disagree with him,” Taylor said. “The last time we did it just wasn’t very positive. I think we’ve got a good process in place, and I’d hate to see us change that if it works. I respect his opinion, but I would suggest we do it like we’ve done it in the past.”
Also up for discussion was to extend the contract through 2025 with Rivertree Systems Inc. to audit non-compliant businesses operating in Trussville.
“We’ve used them forever, and on their website, you’ll see a lot of cities around the state use them,” Mayor Buddy Choat said. “They bring in revenue to us that we’ve missed obviously on some of the businesses, but we’re not out there looking for them. If something comes up pretty obvious, then we would get a report from them. They go do all the work, they keep a percentage, and then we get the balance. I believe it’s a 50/50 split.”
In other matters, Choat also explained what the resolution to adopt the Division G Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan would be used for.
“It’s an agreement that we sign through EMA every year in case we have a major catastrophe in Trussville,” Choat said. “That keeps us eligible for any federal funding and assistance. If we don’t have it, it creates a problem if we need them, so it’s just something that we have to do every year.”
