MOODY – Typically, when you have an overtime game, you expect a heavyweight fight to continue from the previous four quarters with both teams going back and forth with one team eeking out a win at the end. When Mortimer Jordan traveled to Moody on Tuesday night, that was not the case.
The Blue Devils (the Moody version) would take the overtime period as an opportunity to blast the Blue Devils (the Mortimer Jordan version) by a score of 15-3 to give Moody the overtime win.
The first quarter was a bit of a dog fight as the home team would edge out Mortimer Jordan by 2 points, 13-11. Carson Dillashaw had 6 points to lead Moody in the first and Davion Dozier would get his spectacular night started with 4 points in the period.
Moody would find a bit more difficulty scoring in the second, only getting 11 points. Dozier had 6 while Dillashaw added 3 for the quarter. On the defensive side, Moody would allow 12 points to send the game into the break with Moody leading by just two points, 25-23.
Coming out of the locker room, the teams would go toe to toe with one another with Moody outscoring the visitors 14-12. Dillashaw would once again lead a period in scoring by scoring 5 points in the third. Kolby Seymour would add 4 to the 14-point total to put Moody up 39-35 heading into the final frame.
In what everyone thought was the final period of the game, Moody would let Mortimer Jordan outscore them by 4 points, 14-10 to send the game into the overtime period. No surprise here, Dozier put up 6 points to lead Moody in the quarter. Caden Helms would contribute 4 as well.
Knotted at 49-49, the overtime period looked to be a back and forth battle between two teams who had fought and given it all they could for four quarters and the fans were treated to bonus basketball. Moody wanted to leave no doubt who was the better team on the court Tuesday night and that is precisely what they did. On the defensive side, Moody shut down the Mortimer Jordan offense and held them to just 3 points while putting up 15 points. Davion Dozier owned the period, scoring 10 of the 15 points with Chase Jackson and Blaine Burke adding a 2-point bucket each.
Davion Dozier scored an amazing 28 points on the night to lead all scorers. Carson Dillashaw had 14 points and Caden Helms scored 9.
“Good win against a gritty Mortimer Jordan team,” said Moody Coach Chad Bates. “Fought through some adversity and got the game to overtime. Then finished the game strong. We didn’t shoot it well but we attacked the inside and got the shots we needed.”
Moody will host Vincent High School on Thursday night before a Friday night matchup with Pell City and then the area tournament.
