TRUSSVILLE – The Trussville City Council unanimously voted to approve a consent agenda at the April 11 council meeting that, in part, appointed Jason Daniel to the City Board of Education, effective May 26, 2023, with a term ending May 25, 2028.
“We are thrilled that you have applied and gone through the interview process that we put together, and that you would’ve applied three times to be on the school board,” Council President Lisa Bright said to Daniel. “So, we appreciate your willingness to serve.”
Bright said Daniel is V.P. of Physicians Practice Administration on Health Systems with UAB Hospital and a graduate of Jacksonville State.
“I do want to say, too, I appreciate Jason’s willingness to serve and be a part of this,” Councilor Alan Taylor said. “He’s been a part of Leadership Trussville … he’s a great asset to our city and I’m just thankful that we have folks of his caliber that’s willing to serve on the school board.”
Daniel said that he is thankful for the opportunity and looks forward to serving the city through his position on the school board.
“I appreciate the trust that you’re putting in me,” he said. “I will give it my best.”
Moving into the regular agenda, the council unanimously approved a proclamation declaring April 2023 Fair Housing Month.
“April 11, 2023, marks the 55th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act, which annunciates a national policy of fair housing for all who live in the United States,” Councilor Jaime Anderson read from Proclamation 2023-11. “… The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, (and) national origin.”
The council presented a copy of the proclamation to Birmingham Association of Realtors CEO Amanda Creel.
“We just want to thank you, more than anything else, for being part of something that we wanted to do really big and bold as part of the 55th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, which is today,” Creel said. “We decided that we have 68 municipalities that we cover – and Trussville is one of those – and that we wanted to get 55 (to adopt a proclamation). I am proud to say that now you are part of 55 that have adopted that … We believe that housing is a right for all.”
The council also approved the following agenda items:
- Resolution 2023-20, authorizing the mayor to sign ALDOT detour signage permit forms in connection with Liles Lane culvert project
- Resolution 2023-21, awarding the city’s HVAC maintenance bid to Hastings Heating & AC Company Inc.
- Resolution 2023-22, approving the purchase of mounted air compressors for the Trussville Fire Department trailer
- Resolution 2023-23, approving a bid to perform site development at Fire Station No. 4 to Milam & Company
- Resolution 2023-24, authorizing the mayor to sign ALDOT curbing permit forms for parts of US Highway 11
- Resolution 2023-25, approving a surveying, engineering & related services contract with Sain & Associates regarding City Industrial Park Lot 1
Mayor Choat announced that on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, there will be a dedication of the Fallen Warriors Memorial at the Trussville Veterans’ Memorial Park at 2 p.m.
“This represents every county in Alabama,” Choat said. “There’s somebody recognized in that memorial from every county in Alabama. We’re proud to be a part of it.”
Councilor Anderson said that the Beautification Board is now taking nominations for its annual Beautification awards.
Jane Alexander, with the Trussville Historical Committee gave the council updates concerning the Historical Society.
“This coming Sunday, we are unveiling a historical marker in front of Heritage Hall,” Alexander said. “… Heritage Hall has been in this community for 85 years.”
The unveiling ceremony will last from 1-4 p.m.
The next regular meeting of the Trussville City Council will be Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at the City Hall Annex, beginning at 6 p.m.
