BIRMINGHAM – A Forestdale man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in an apparent assault.
At approximately 4:35 p.m., Birmingham police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Fourth Street Thomas on a report of a person shot. Officers arrived on scene and observed the victim, Derek Jason Wright, 39, of Forestdale, lying in front of a yard suffering from a gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
An initial investigation suggests that Wright was riding his bicycle when several suspects approached him in a vehicle. One suspect exited the vehicle and opened fire on him.
The suspects then fled the scene.
No one is currently in custody.
