JEFFERSON COUNTY — Senior Trooper Justin O’Neal identified the victims in a multi-vehicle crash that occurred around 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday night near Birmingham.
O’Neal said two people from Rainsville, Jefferson S. Jones and Susan S. Jones were killed and two women were transported to area hospitals.
“The crash occurred when the 2020 Jeep Cherokee driven by Jefferson S. Jones, 63, of Rainsville collided head-on with the 2018 Mazda CX-5 driven by Kellie R. Stephenson, 29, of Irondale,” O’Neal said. “After the initial impact, the Cherokee struck the 2020 Freightliner commercial truck driven by Lolita R. Matthews, 55, of Leeds. Jefferson S. Jones and a passenger in the Jeep, Susan S. Jones, 58, also of Rainsville, were both fatally injured and pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.”
Stephenson and Matthews were both transported to local hospitals for medical treatment.
The crash occurred on Interstate 459 near the 19 mile marker, less than one mile west of Birmingham, in Jefferson County.
No further information is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
