MOODY – The winners of the recent 2023 Moody Christmas Parade were awarded by the city council during a meeting on Dec. 11.
The winners from the parade on Dec. 9 were judged in the categories of business, organizations and mayor’s choice.
These were:
- In the category of business, first place for The Dental Office and second place for Line of Fire
- In the category of organizations, first place for Iron City Wranglers Jeep Club
- In the category of mayor’s choice was Divine Fitness
“We want to thank everyone for participating in our parade,” said Mayor Joe Lee. “As usual it was a huge success.”
Afterwards the council heard reports from department heads for the month of November. Police Chief Reece Smith reported 1,250 calls, 29 traffic accidents, 169 citations, 144 completed reports, 69 misdemeanors, 45 felonies. $7,660 was spent on vehicle maintenance.
Fire Chief Larry Horton reported 165 calls, five woods, grass and rubbish fires, 93 emergency medical calls, eight vehicle wrecks, 15 public services, 31 lift assists, 23 false alarms, mutual aid given and received twice each. There were 13 annual inspections, six re-inspections and one fire pump inspection.
Later the council passed a resolution to move forward with a project to extend the sewer line from its current location on Kelly Creek Road to Kelly Creek Commerce Park. City Attorney James Hill explained that the resolution allows the city to make a grant application for funding.
The application was to request funding available from the SEEDS Act to cover 57% of the costs.
Hill later added that the overall estimated cost of the project will vary depending on the bids once they’re sent out. The council also passed a resolution for a utility agreement with GUSC of Moody, the Commercial Development Authority of Moody and Kelly Creek Commerce Park to cover part of the project.
“As you can imagine the infrastructure that we are extending into the Kelly Creek Commerce Park largely is benefitting or will benefit that park as it develops, which obviously benefits the city as we continue to grow,” he said.
In other business the council:
- Approved a request from Smith to purchase a Taser 7 to replace an older one for $2,500,
- Approved sending a K-9 officer to a patrol and detection training on Feb. 5-9 for $624,
- Approved a request from Horton to hire two personnel and send them to a fire recruit school for an approximate cost of $2,000, and
- Canceled the scheduled meeting for Dec. 25.
Meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of every month at 6 p.m. at Moody City Hall on 670 Park Ave.
