BIRMINGHAM — A shootout in Birmingham’s Lakeview entertainment district early Saturday morning left one man dead, another with life-threatening wounds and a food truck and multiple vehicles with damage from gunfire.
Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the call came in at about 2:50 a.m. on Saturday.
An off-duty BPD officer who was working security at a Lakeview bar heard the shots coming from the 700 block of 29th Street South, Fitzgerald said. Police were alerted to two adult males on the ground with gunshot wounds near a food truck.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced one of the males dead on the scene and transported the other male to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation indicated the two had argued with another group of males earlier that night. That incident escalated into a physical altercation resulting in both parties firing guns at each other.
A food truck in a nearby parking lot and several vehicles were struck by gunfire, but Fitzgerald said he didn’t believe any bystanders were hit.
Police don’t have anyone in custody at this time and they are hoping the public will help.
“We know the Lakeview district was crowded this morning,” Fitzgerald said.
Police asked anyone that may have any information to call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
