From Tribune staff reports
BIRMINGHAM — The National Weather Service in Birmingham is predicting a chance of snow for much of north Alabama by the end of the week.
In the Tribune coverage area, there is about a 20% chance of the white stuff on Friday. But just a little further north in Alabama’s DeKalb County, the chances are a bit stronger with a 30% chance for snow on Thursday and a 20% chance on Friday.
Snow predictions in the deep south can always be tricky due to the multiple elements required produce the frozen precipitation.
“But, all eyes are on the situation Thursday night and Friday as a cold core upper low moves over the Tennessee Valley,” Birmingham meteorologist James Spann said.
The daytime temperatures are projected in the 40s, so any snow that falls will have a short lifespan. All of the models show less than one half inch in Alabama.
“For now, meaningful accumulation or impact looks unlikely with surface temperatures generally above freezing, relatively warm soil conditions, and very limited moisture,” Spann said. “But, as pointed out here often, cold core upper lows are a “weatherman’s woe” and can bring surprises, so as always watch for forecast changes.”
