GULF SHORES – The Hewitt-Trussville Track and Field team competed in the AHSAA outdoor track meet this weekend.
The Lady Huskies finished second to Hoover in 7A. The Girls cross country and indoor track teams also came home with the “red map” (runner-up) trophy in the 2023-24 school year.
The Girls 4×800 meter relay team of Mary Durham, Kinley Harris, Hadley Turner, and Avery Cahoon won the state championship, set a new Alabama record, and recorded the 19th fastest 4×800 time in the U.S. with a 9:13.85 performance.
Avery Cahoon won the 1600-meter title, and Madisyn Hawkins won the discus championship.
“The girls stepped up in a huge way,” said head coach Jamey Curlee. “They were leading days one and two but fell short.”
“Seniors Avery Cahoon, Kinley Harris, and Madisyn Hawkins led the charge,” he said. “Our distance girls scored big points all three days.”
“Great athletes, coaches, parents, and administrators helped all three seasons (xc, indoor, outdoor); three maps in three seasons,” Curlee said. “That’s never been done before.”
Hawkins was runner-up in the Shot Put.
Haven White finished third in the Pole Vault.
The Boys team finished fourth.”We knew there would be five teams in a close fight to keep up with Hoover,” Curlee said.
The Boys 4×100 meter relay team finished second.
Michael Igbinoghene finished third in the Long Jump.
”It’s been a long season,” Curlee said. “I’m proud of how hard our kids have worked.”
