BIRMINGHAM, Ala.–Birmingham Police are currently searching for an armed homicide suspect who an officer fired shots at Tuesday night while leaving the scene, according to BPD Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
At around 8:20 p.m., BPD Real Time Crime Center Specialists alerted officers that a stolen vehicle had been spotted the North Birmingham Homes Housing Community, commonly referred to as Vice Hills.
As officers arrived on the scene and found the stolen vehicle, they heard shots coming from an apartment nearby.
One officer observed an armed suspect exit the apartment and confronted the suspect, who has not been identified.
During the confrontation, the officer fired shots at the armed suspect though police are currently unsure if the officer’s shots struck the suspect.
The suspect then entered the passenger side of the stolen vehicle and the occupants of the vehicle fled the scene.
Officers pursued the stolen vehicle until the occupants abandoned the vehicle in the 4100 block of Fairmont Place.
During the pursuit, additional officers responded to the apartment where shots were fired and found an adult male victim lying unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Charlie Moore of Birmingham.
As of 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers have not located the suspects.
