IRONDALE, Ala.–The Irondale City Council met for the first regular meeting of the month on October 2. The meeting was held on Wednesday night due to the National Night Out activities on Tuesday night.
The council moved quickly through the brief agenda, moving all four regular agenda items to the consent agenda with three other items already on consent. Much of the discussion during the evening took place during the mayor and councilor reports early in the meeting.
“I want to thank everyone who came out to the 137th birthday celebration for the city of Irondale that took place on Saturday. We had a wonderful time,” said Mayor James D. Stewart Jr.
The celebration was held Saturday, Sept. 28 at Beacon Park in Irondale. The concert was headlined by local favorite, and American Idol winner, Ruben Studdard. The concert series began in August with Jazz Fest and will conclude with Country Fest on Nov. 2.
In addition to the music festivals, Irondale will be hosting the “Yo Amo Irondale Festival” on Saturday, October 5 at City Hall from 3-6 p.m. The festival, honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, is open to the public, free of charge, and will feature family-friendly activities, food trucks, live music, and more.
“The City of Irondale is proud to be home to a vibrant Hispanic population as well as numerous, successful Hispanic-owned businesses,” Stewart said in a release.
“The Yo Amo Irondale Festival is an expression of our commitment to inclusivity and to building community by bringing neighbors together. All are welcome to join us as we celebrate the wonderful diversity of our City during Hispanic Heritage Month.”
Councilor Cindy Cuellar took time in her announcements to thank the Irondale Fire Department for collecting supplies for Hurricane Helene victims in North Carolina. She also thanked local business owner Jeff Copeland for donating items to the cause.
In other business, the council approve:
- An MOU with the Dept. of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Agency
- An agreement with Truist Bank for merchant services
- A donation of $1000 from the discretionary fund of Councilman London and $500 from Councilman Sims to the Shades Valley High School Volleyball Team to attend the October Shrimp Festival Tournament in Gulf Shores.
