Barbara “MamaHug” Stephens, beloved woman of God and cherished mother and friend, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024, in Pensacola, Florida.
Born on August 29, 1942, in Louisville, KY, Barbara’s life was a testament of love, faith, and service to God and to others. Known by many names-Mom, Nana, Mama, and most affectionately “MamaHug”, she touched the lives of everyone around her with her warmth and compassion. Her hugs were legendary, a symbol of her boundless love.
Barbara dedicated her life to sharing the Gospel and helping others heal and recover through her Abundant Life ministry. She traveled to numerous countries as a missionary, and also led many small groups and large assemblies wherever God led her to speak. She authored several devotional books and workbooks as part of her ministry for healing. Her faith in the Lord was unwavering, and her commitment to loving others was evident in everything she did.
Barbara was the daughter of Wayland and Bobbie Ward and was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Linda Ward Morton, and her son-in-law Jeff Hill.
Barbara is survived by her three children: Beau Stephens (Terry), Allison Hill, and John Stephens (Cindy); three grandchildren: Chris Stephens (Becca), Abigail Conlee (Clark), and Hannah Stephens; four great-grandchildren, Bryson, Alexis, and Lilly Stephens, Alison Conlee; and her spiritual daughter, Kelty Barber.
Over the years, she opened her heart and home to a total of 56 foster children, embodying her commitment to love and nurture others.
Barbara’s passions included traveling, reading her Bible, painting amazing art with watercolors, embracing bright colors, and spending quality time with her family and many friends. She had a special connection with her beloved dog, Charlie Banjo, who was her constant companion and friend.
Though she is deeply missed by all who knew her, we rejoice in the knowledge that she is now reunited with her Lord and Savior in Heaven. MamaHug’s legacy of love, compassion, and faith will continue to inspire everyone she leaves behind.
