TUSKEGEE — A shooting following the Tuskegee University homecoming football game on Saturday left one person dead and several others injured, according to university officials.
A statement from the University indicated that the person killed was not a Tuskegee student, but students were among those who were injured in the incident.
“The parents of this individual have been notified,” According to a statement from school officials. “Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.”
Videos circulating on social media show students and fans taking cover behind parked vehicles as gunshots rang out in the background. The audio indicates multiple weapons may have been using Glock switches, but that has not been confirmed by law enforcement officials.
University officials said the scene had been secured and that the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) would be taking the lead in the investigation. Officials said they were still in the process of accounting for students and reaching out to student families.
“The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents,” according to the statement. “Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
