BIRMINGHAM, Ala.–A dog that discovered a human skull in Birmingham over four months ago has recently uncovered a ‘long bone’ in the same area, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
On August 20, the coroner’s office stated a homeowner discovered a human skull left by his dog near his home on 5th Place NW. Where the dog originally found the skull at is unknown, and a search of the surrounding area failed to recover any other remains. The coroner later ruled the death a homicide due to a gunshot wound.
Additionally, a DNA analysis of the skull did not match any known person in the national Combined DNA Index System database.
Earlier this week, the same dog was found in possession of a ‘long bone’ in the front yard of the same residence. A search of nearby properties and doorbell cameras again failed to reveal where the dog found the bone or where in the area the dog was roaming.
The coroner’s office will be performing tests over the coming days to determine if the bone is human and if it is associated with the skull recovered in August.
