BIRMINGHAM, Ala.–Though many roads in the Birmingham metro area have become more passable as today’s rainfall turned snow to slush, multiple agencies are warning drivers of the threat of black ice overnight into tomorrow.
Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing in the area around 4 a.m., possibly getting as low as 28 degrees tomorrow, creating the conditions for dangerous black ice on local roadways.
“As temperatures drop below freezing, remaining moisture on roadways may re-freeze,” the National Weather Service in Birmingham warned.
“Ice can be very difficult to see on roadways, especially at night, and roads may go from clear to icy very quickly.”
The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency has also urged residents to avoid traveling tomorrow until temperatures rise.
“If you must travel, please use caution and give yourself ample time to get to your destination,” Jefferson County EMA stated.
NWS Birmingham is currently forecasting temperatures to rise above freezing around 11 a.m. tomorrow, but they are expected to drop back to well below freezing Saturday night into Sunday morning.
