JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. — The Jefferson County Commission on Thursday voted against a request to expand zoning at the former site of Wesley’s Boobie Trap, citing strong opposition from nearby residents and concerns about compatibility with the surrounding community.
The property, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 78 and Warrior Jasper Road, has housed an adult entertainment venue since the 1980s but has been closed since September 2024. While the current zoning would allow a bar or lounge to operate at the site, commissioners declined to approve a request that would have combined zoning parcels and permitted expansion beyond the existing building.
Commission President Jimmie Stephens said the decision followed extensive public feedback, including a petition and numerous calls from residents who opposed the proposal.
Stephens said the area has undergone significant change since the business originally opened, evolving from a sparsely populated area into a suburban community with nearby homes, schools and churches.
Residents who spoke against the rezoning expressed concern that an expanded business could eventually lead to the return of adult entertainment at the site. Others raised questions about alcohol service and the potential impact on neighborhood safety and quality of life.
According to Stephens, the commission received a petition signed by approximately 300 people, along with calls from residents across the surrounding area, including neighboring communities.
Stephens said the vote reflected the responsibility of county officials to represent the interests of their constituents and to support long-term community development goals.
The commission’s action does not prohibit a bar from operating under the existing zoning but prevents the proposed expansion tied to the rezoning request.
