PINSON, Ala. — The Pinson City Council approved a resolution authorizing an incentive structure for administrators at the local schools during a meeting on Thursday night.

The regular meeting began with a presentation of a check from Rep. Danny Garrett, whose district includes part of Pinson. During his remarks he told the council that thousands of dollars have been allocated for Pinson, namely for Turkey Creek and the schools.
This latest allocation was for the Mt. Pinson Presbyterian Church for painting and preservation repairs. He also announced that $15,000 from the Jefferson County Community Service Fund will be secured for the planned veterans memorial park that was discussed at the last meeting.
Garret then presented a check of $75,000 to the council.
Afterwards the council approved several rounds of funding for Turkey Creek, Kermit Johnson Elementary School and the three fire districts. $25,000 was granted to Turkey Creek, $15,000 for the school and $155,000 total to the fire districts.
The final action taken by the council was to approve the incentive structure for the local school administrators as offered by Councilor Brad Walker.
At the previous meeting the council authorized a resolution that granted $1,000 annually to TEAMS and nationally certified teachers, with it being mentioned that more may be granted in the future.
“This is for the administrators,” Walker said. “Not just the principals but the assistant principals as well because they all have a difficult job with our kids and we want to recognize what they do.”
The incentive structure is based on performance and funding is given out when state report cards are issued in the 2026-2027 school year. Assistant principals receive 50% of the grants.
Different amounts of money are given for different performances:
- Increase overall score by one letter grade: $2,000
- Maintain letter grade C: $1,000
- Maintain letter grade B: $3,000
- Maintain letter grade A: $5,000
- Increase academic achievement by five points: $500
- Increase academic growth by five points: $500
- Each 5% increase in any one area (ELA, math, science): $50
- Each 5% increase in any two areas (ELA, math, science): $100
- Each 5% increase in any three areas (ELA, math, science): $150
Reducing chronic absenteeism:
- 5% reduction: $500
- 10% reduction: $500
- Maintained at less than 10%: $1,000
Like the previous resolution, the structure is considered a preliminary action and more funding will depend on the results, Walker said. It will also depend on the budget as well, he added.
“We just feel like it’s important that we recognize our educators and the administration and that we have an objective baseline to provide those funds,” Walker remarked.
In other business the council:
- Approved an ordinance to authorize enrollment in Municipal Intercept Services, and
- Approved providing free hot dogs for a fireworks event on July 11.
