LAFAYETTE, Ala. — The Alabama Department of Transportation has begun resurfacing sections of US-431 through LaFayette.
The project runs about a half-mile just south of SR-50 before County Road 93.
In addition to 3.2 miles of resurfacing, the project will include upgrades to pedestrian safety from 2nd Avenue to Alabama Avenue, according to ALDOT. Work will include drainage, curb, gutter, and sidewalk upgrades.
The project will also include a “road diet” from Alabama Avenue to SR-77 in downtown LaFayette. That area will shift from a four-lane undivided roadway to a three-lane.
ALDOT said the new three-lane section is designed to reduce speed differences. The middle lane will serve as a reversible turn lane for left turns in both directions.
ALDOT’s work will require lane shifts and temporary closures on some street parking. Daily lane closures are expected on SR-1 within the designated areas.
Motorists are asked to accommodate by adjusting travel times, observing posted speed limits in work zones, and using caution.
