MOODY, Ala. — Two officers of the Moody Police Department were recognized at a city council meeting on Monday night for going “above and beyond” in recent lifesaving efforts, according to Police Chief Reece Smith.
He read a statement that detailed an incident that took place on July 14 when officers were called to 39 Dragline Lane. At the scene Sgt. Bryan Smith found a woman who was being given CPR by her son and took over.
Shortly afterwards, he and Officer Andrew Praytor took actions to administer an AED, which sends a shock to heart similar to a defibrillator. It worked and the woman was revived, said Chief Smith. Medics arrived and transported her for further treatment.
He added that Praytor had only received the device two days prior to the emergency call.
“You know, my officers do a great job,” Chief Smith said. “It’s not often that they’re getting recognized for medical stuff, but it’s easier for them to get there faster than it is to get a big fire truck there sometimes.”
He expressed his appreciation to the local fire department for providing training on the use of the AED device, as well as the council for approving them.
“They came here first,” he said. “And so [the council] go them out on the street and it did turn out to help the public.”
He also stated that the woman continues to recover. Some of her family members were present at the meeting.
“She’s making progress every day,” Chief Smith said. “I want to pray for her and I ask anybody in the crowd to pray for her recovery.”
The council heard reports from department heads for the month of July, with Chief Smith stating that there were 1,053 calls, 30 traffic accidents, 136 citations, 111 reports completed, 50 misdemeanors, 12 felonies, five juvenile cases, 43 arrests and $3,895.84 was spent on vehicle maintenance.
Moody Fire and Rescue reported 185 incidents, six of which were car-related. There were 109 emergency medical calls and 70 other calls for service. There were 119 inspections, 23 re-inspections and five permits issued.
Moody City Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of every month at 6 p.m. at Moody City Hall on 670 Park Ave.
