JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. — A Birmingham man was killed Thursday morning after the bicycle he was riding was hit by a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office vehicle followed by a tractor-trailer.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, 39-year-old Marcus Devon Gordon was riding his bicycle on Sweeney Hollow Road when he was hit by a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
ALEA did not initially release the name of the officer.
Following the initial collision, Gordon was struck by a 2014 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by 60-year-old Leon Hapton, of Pinson.
Gordon was thrown from the bicycle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash happened around 4:02 a.m. Aug. 13, near Amy Drive Northeast, approximately two miles north of Center Point.
Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are investigating the crash.
