John James Evans Jr., of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026, surrounded by the family and friends he loved so dearly.
Born in Homewood, Alabama, on December 26, 1955, John lived a life marked by music, family, friendship, adventure, and a passion for all things fast. A devoted Auburn fan and lifelong musician, he found joy behind a drum set or with a guitar in hand. Music was not simply a hobby; it was woven into the very fabric of who he was. Through music, John formed many meaningful friendships, including a special bond with fellow musician David Daniel. Their shared love of music created countless memories and a friendship that John deeply valued throughout his life.
To know John was to know the value he placed on friendship. He had a gift for forming deep, lasting connections, and nurturing them throughout his life. Among those friendships, Wes Fogleman held a special place in John’s heart. John lovingly referred to Wes as his “brother from another mother,” a reflection of the extraordinary bond they shared. Their unwavering loyalty and decades of shared memories reflected a connection that felt more like family than friendship.
John was also deeply proud of his service in the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Independence (CV-62) and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), carrying with him a profound sense of pride and gratitude for the experiences and relationships forged during those years. One of the greatest blessings of his military service was the lifelong friendship he shared with Steve Flemming, with whom he proudly served. Their bond endured across decades and distance, rooted in the brotherhood forged during their years in the Navy.
Above all else, John was devoted to his family. Nothing brought him greater pride or joy than the people he loved. He is survived by his loving wife, Bonita Thompson Evans; his daughter, Jennifer Drew (Tony); his sister, Ruth Moses Lovell; and his cherished grandchildren, Evans Drew, Alden Drew, Neveah Evans, and Clearly Evans, who brought immeasurable happiness to his life.
John will be remembered for his love of music, his appreciation for speed and adventure, and his pride in serving his country. More than anything, he will be remembered for his generous heart and the love he gave so freely to his family and friends.
His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Yet the music, laughter, stories, and love he leaves behind will continue to echo through the lives of those fortunate enough to have shared in his journey.
Rest peacefully, Papa. We love you, and we will carry your memory in our hearts always.
