TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville Police Department took a proactive approach to plan for civil unrest in the wake of destructive riots nationwide over the death of George Floyd. Chief Eric Rush said he coordinated with surrounding agencies to develop a plan for mutual aid and to discuss response plans. Rush said there would be extra patrols on hand in the city of Trussville.
“I have doubled personnel around the clock and I have specialty units on standby to respond if needed,” said Rush.
Rush has also been in communication with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and he has been reviewing policies on how to go about requesting activation of the National Guard if needed.
“I get it,” said Rush. “I get the reason behind the peaceful protests. I do not get the reason behind the rioting and the destruction of property. I do get that they are trying to make a change.”
Rush said he recognizes change is needed in places across the nation.
“I do believe that some departments have bad leadership and there needs to be a change,” he said. “I know for a fact that none of my guys would sit on a guy’s neck for nine minutes.”
Rush said his department frequently reviews policies to ensure safety of all citizens and law enforcement.
