BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department released details about a shooting death that happened on Monday, Oct. 12, 2020.
Jessie Merchant Birt, 24, of Birmingham, was shot and taken to UAB, by Birmingham Fire and Rescue, where he died.
The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m.
After investigating, detectives discovered the Birt had called 911 to report a person in the parking lot with a gun, as he was walking his dog. Investigators believe the person with the gun was showing the weapon to another person.
“Birt went outside where he encountered the suspect,” Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin said in a press release. “An exchange occurred between the victim and the suspect which lead to Birt being shot.”
The suspect fled the scene.
