BIRMINGHAM — A Birmingham man was fatally wounded in a reported assault on Sunday, June 12, at approximately 10:25 p.m.
“Officers from the South Precinct responded to a ‘shots fired’ call at 1237 Beacon Parkway East at the High Point Apartment Complex,” Sergeant Rodarius Mauldin said. “Upon arrival, officers heard multiple gunshots and encountered a large group of people running from the pool area.”
Officers encountered McDonald in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound as multiple people attempted to render aid.
McDonald was transported to UAB Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Officers later discovered two other gunshot victims (ages 17 and 21) were transported to local hospitals from the shooting by private vehicle. Their injuries were non-life-threatening.
“The preliminary investigation indicates several people were attending a pool party, and an altercation ensued amongst a resident and party-goers leading to the resident retrieving a weapon,” Mauldin said. “Ultimately, several shots were fired.”
Officers responded and encountered the suspect armed with a rifle.
“During the encounter, an officer discharged a firearm; however, the suspect was not struck nor were there other injuries resulting from the officer’s discharge,” Mauldin said. “The suspect fled into a nearby apartment and was taken into custody.”
The Birmingham Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division will conduct the officer-involved shooting investigation.
