BESSEMER — Jefferson County Sheriff Deputies were called to investigate a report of a shooting just after 7:20 a.m. Oct. 5, at a home in the 5100 block of Williams Drive near Bessemer according to a release from the department.
The investigation indicated that a 28-year-old male victim was allegedly shot by a 28-year-old male suspect who forced his way into the home. The victim returned fire and struck the suspect.
After the shooting, the suspect was driven to Fairfield by a friend who pulled off the road and called 911. The victim had been an overnight guest of the woman who lived at the home. The suspect was the ex-boyfriend of the woman.
Both the suspect and the victim were transported to the hospital. The victim was released two days later. The suspect’s injuries were more serious and he remained in the hospital until Oct. 13.
Detectives obtained arrest warrants charging the suspect with attempted murder and first degree burglary.
When he was released from the hospital he was transferred to the Jefferson County jail in Bessemer. The suspect, 28-year-old John Howard Sherman of Bessemer, remains in the Jefferson County Jail with bond set at $120,000.
